The Oblates

Our Lady of Peace Monastery sponsors an active oblate group.  Benedictine Oblates are lay associates who use the Rule of St. Benedict as a guideline for forming and enriching their lives.   They live the values of monastic life in their homes and workplaces.  They also learn about and support the works of this Benedictine community and Benedictines world-wide.

Oblates commit themselves without limitation to God.  They resolve to live their daily life for God, blending prayer and work in their ordinary course of life, whether married or single.   To be an Oblate means to "offer one's self in prayer and service."  Candidates make an oblation of themselves in a ceremony during which they sign their commitment document on the altar.

With the help and guidance of the Sisters of Our Lady of Peace Monastery, the Oblate group provides a community dedicated to support this mutual growth in the spirituality of St. Benedict.   Oblates usually gather at the monastery monthly for prayer, formation, and, in the spirit of Bendict, food and socializing.  All denominations are welcome.

If you live in mid-Missouri and would like to participate in our Oblate  program, please contact  barbbock1@juno.com.   You may visit the Oblate gathering several times to help discern if this is where the Holy Spirit is leading you.  You may then become an Oblate candidate, which is a period, minimally one year in length, of studying the Rule of Benedict and being active in the Oblate group.  At that point, you and the Oblate Director will discern your readiness to make your oblation.
